Tia's End Of Year Reflection

Over this year in grade five I have learned so much and grown so much. I have improved in so many ways and still need to improve in somethings. In the beginning of the year I wasn't a horrible student but iI did have many places of improvement. Like in writing or math. I also had places to improve as a person like my growth mindset. I used to think that good grades are all I want from my out come of school yet know I have learned to realize that I want to have agency for my learning and self.

                 - Reading
In reading I have improved because in the beginning  I wouldn't think deeply with books and figure out small easy parts that could have helped understand difficult parts in the story. Yet now I am able to comprehend and synthesize my texts. I am also able to notice sign posts that lead to deeper parts in the story. I have also improved in m jots I now think about what the story is telling me and create it in to a jot where I show my abilities of how I think of the book. I also know how to look at the book in different perspectives and angles. I put my self into different characters shoes and feel the character.

                 - Writing
In writing I have improved in a really dramatic way in the beginning of the year my writing was very plain and boring and this year I took many small and simple strategies to help me improve my writing. An example would be said is dead like  not using said and using other words like blurted or commanded. Also I have learned to show and not tell, cause if I just give away the answer of how the character is feeling in the book whats the point of reading it. In poetry I improved by writing about deep concepts involving human social issues and phycological human perspectives.

                 - Math
In math I believe that I have improved not only academically I learned to like math as a fine subject. I used always be confused in many different equation and problems  but now I  am learning to use efficient strategies and to check my answers. I have also grown to like math and I like to put all my potential  in to my math work and problems. I have learnt to look at what I know and use what I know to figure out what I don't know. Sometimes problems would get tough but I have learned to persevere and use several perspectives and strategies to solve  the problem.

                 - Science
I have grown in science by learning to investigate and observe more and more.   I usually never used to question really important things and never to figure out the unknown. Really I never used to be interested in what the outcome of an experiment would be and my reviews  and observations wouldn't be elaborate. Now I  have learnt to  put my full potential in my projects and observations.  To talk about the cause and effect of the variable or so.

  - Social Studies
During this year in social studies I have learned about many different civilizations and groups of people. Earlier in the year we were learning about the aztec empire. during our unit we learnt about how the aztec empire was fierce and strong and were a strong empire. It also talks about how the aztecs social systems and and ways and strategies of doing things helped them be successful.
Now we are learning about science and technology and its impact on the world.

  - Citizenship
During my year in 5th grade I have grown to  become a better CAC citizen. I have learnt to have a growth mind set and to never give up. I think that these core values that I use in CAC are making CAC a fun and safe environment. An example would be how I would respect everyone around me and everyone does the same for me.  The most important core value to me is compassion cause I believe if we are compassionate to everybody around us than we will not have troubles in he future with self esteem and group work and school.

Most proud of...
This year I am most proud of how I have grown to love learning. Many kids always say "school is so boring" "I hate school" "school is dumb" but I think why do kids take learning as a joke. I believe that school is a privilege and students must take it seriously which is what I have learnt is to enjoy it and like it cause not all kids get to go to school. Learning is fun and I have grown to put all my effort into my learning and I have learnt to appreciate it and use it wisely.

Most enjoyable...
In grade five I think the most enjoyable thing we did of all was the trip to el mouezz street, Because the whole class got a chance to explore different traditions and life style the early arabs had. In addition we got to explore the architectural buildings and homes made in this time. Further more the grade fives got a chance to explore khan el Khalili which is a bazaar in old Cairo.

Most challenging...
During my time in grade five I think the most challenging thing we did all year was probably in math cause this year in math I improved so much but that did not all happen in a second. I would practice almost every day for half an hour and every week for two hours. And all that work did take me somewhere  for example my MAP test score in the beginning of the year  was   217  and in the end of the year it was  234. I think all the dedication and challenge took me to a point where I improved a lot.  The challenge was to face stress and tests and to find time to practice.

World Development

How is science and technology changing the world... past... present... future?

Are these changes good? Why or why not?

My thoughts  so far are that technology has made a huge impact on people. An example of this would be how cell phones were an invention the that impacted people so much and now we have smart phones. Every day scientists and engineers working to find the new phone the new machine the new medicine. Every day improving to make our daily objects more powerful and and have more on there than us. Like blenders blend fruits for us before people would stop on fruits to make juice. Technology is making medication be more convenient and food fresher and easier to store. Technology is making people connect with people from huge distances around the world. Like now people have invented speaker like objects that you can talk to and instruct .  Some people couldn't get cured from many diseases back in the 19's and now we have so much advanced technology in the medical industry. I believe that technology has bettered the world on  a dramatic way.

My Whole Unit Reflection

During the time of my class learning about landforms and how their formed and how that  happens, I learnt many things that fascinated me about the earths land.

EQ answering: Why does the earth look the way it does?
The earth looks the way it does due to several different things that shape it to what it is now.  For example erosion, erosion is when water or ice, wind, chemicals shape the earth. An example of erosion would be when your at a beach and the water is putting a force on the sand and pulling it away with it back into the ocean. Some times the our earth changes its shape  due to many different natural disasters. For example an earth quake can make a big crack or make a piece of land fall. A tsunami can break land apart or drift land away. Same as all kind of disasters like sink holes or hurricanes or acid rain which can also change the shape.  Another three things do it like weathering,  weathering is when rocks and other pieces of land break down due to exposure to the atmosphere and biological organisms. Weathering is caused by water, ice, acids, salt and plants. Some thing else that effects the earths shape is climate. Climate changes the surfaces by creating glaciers that can cut peaks of mountains. Also these glaciers can form erosion land marks.  Also something called  Uplifting. Uplifting is when two earth plates combine and one grows on top of the other  and creates mountains. Also lakes and rivers that are in-between a canyon or valley are technically erosion.  So our earth does change a whole lot in many different ways even right now as you read this article erosion is happening. Thats how our world evolved and changed.

Some fun things that I experienced are....

The wadi field trip, this trip gave me a visual explanation of erosion

The stream table experiment, this also gave me a visual explanation

Also all the videos that we saw in class gave good explanation

Virtual reality thoughts: In my virtual reality experience I felt like I was in the canyon and the falls. For the grand canyon I enjoyed seeing it in close ups. Also seeing the rocks and how they have been eroded.  For the Victoria falls I much more enjoyed it. I enjoyed the Victoria  falls more because I felt it was more adventurous and scary. Which in my perspective is more fun. I saw the cliff of the fall and the running waters.
Stream table thoughts: My thoughts on the stream table are the visual explanations they give. When I saw the                                                                                            stream table I got a connection to the outside world  about erosion.  Which helped me understand the processes and how and when erosion happens.

Cool Careers

There are many different scientists jobs in the field of earth science here are some jobs:
Paleontology: Paleontology is the scientific study of geologic past that involves analysis of plant and animal fossils. This includes microscopic fossils that are found in rocks, it is concerned with all aspects of biology and you sty the shapes and structures of the fossil. You would also study connections it has with other fossils and connections with modern day life and with the environment. This job is important so people can understand the history of life on earth and its relationships with the modern world. Also this career helps oil and petrol companies find places with natural gas. It also aids many theories of evolution and earth history.

Geologist: A geologist is someone who studies liquid and solids and gases that are related to land also how this affects land.  Geologists also study how to extract natural gases and minerals from the ground. Also geologists study natural disasters like earth quakes or sink holes or tsunamis. This job is important cause people need to know about how the earth was formed and why.  Also we have to learn about what are land is.

Nature guide: A nature guide is someone who shows the public about earth science.  What he or she does is they take people who volunteer out in the nature. They can do it by taking people on hikes or expeditions. This job is important because of how it shows others how fascinating nature is and how the our world is made. Also this might teach others not to pollute and tell them that our earth is too precious to pollute in.

Wadi Trip

Today my class and I went to the Wadi to explore erosion. We went on a hot spring Monday but that didn't ruin the trip. The whole fifth grade went and it was really fun and enjoyable. We walked a lot during the time in the field trip but as I walked I wondered about how the wadi was eroded and many other questions. Later after reaching our destination in the Wadi we met with Dr.Bill the geoligist
and he explained many different things about the Wadi. One thing Dr.Bill talked about that surprised me was how the lime stone in the wadi was made. The answer was really surprising to me cause right after the question he started talking about fossils. I thought how does this relate to the question and then towards the end he had said the limestone was created by the fossil. Another fun thing that I experienced on the trip was the hike. Me as Tia I love hiking and I have experienced it many times so unlike other students opinions I really enjoyed the fun and adventure. I saw lots  of stone and small particles of lime stone which was really cool and I saw how the water erosion worked and how it effected the land. I think that the wadi is a great place to explore this kind of science. Also I wonder how long did it take to  get the wadi to what it is now.  Over all the trip was adventurous and fun and I really enjoyed it.

Standard Stream

Question: How does water erosion affect landforms?

Hypothesis: If water flows over land then the water will affect the shape of the land

Equipment: 3 cups one cup for drainage basin another cup for the water [the cup with the hole] and another cup the one we used to pour in the water. We also needed our plastic basket with was simulated to a land area. We also needed our land mixture and a ruler and a computer for recording. Also our noting paper.

Method and procedure:  In the stream table experiment there were many steps. First we had to gather all our equipment. Then we had to make our plateau and get our computers ready and the cups of water ready. Next we poured the water into the cup that is placed over our plateau simulation and the water started eroding.

Events occurred: At 1:56 a river started to form. At 2:00 another river formed. At 2:40 the water was creating a hole. At 3:30 a delta formed it was a very impressive one compared to other stream tables. At 5:27 a shore started forming cause a whole lot of water formed in front of it. At 7:00 water started going down the drainage basin.

Conclusion: At first I thought would this also have such an effect on the real world.  After the stream table I noticed that it really does make a change. My hypothesis was correct as I had stated before that water erosion does shape the land differently. From what I had witnessed in that experiment I noticed that all the rivers and lakes in the world eroded huge pieces of like the colorado river or the river nile all kinds of fascinating things are still eroding at this very moment and after the visual explanation of the experiment I realized how water erosion has an applicable background towards what  see.

Virtual Reality Expierience

In my virtual reality experience I felt like I was in the canyon and the falls. For the grand canyon I enjoyed seeing it in close ups. Also seeing the rocks and how they have been eroded. Also how the virtual reality made it so realistic to me. I saw all the rocks and how there shaped, and seeing the colorado river and how it eroded in between the rocks.  I wonder how other people feel when their in the actual natural environment. In all it was really interesting and fun.

For the Victoria falls I much more enjoyed it. I enjoyed the Victoria  falls more because I felt it was more adventurous and scary. Which in my perspective is more fun. I saw the cliff of the fall and the running waters. I also saw how this huge piece of water eroded the lands. As a result of the erosion it shaped small little lands across this big piece of water. I wonder how people who research about this or see the actual water fall are not afraid of exploring it. And in all both were beautiful and fantastic sites.

EQ Answering

EQ Answering: Why does our earth look the way it does?
Our earth has actually changed a whole lot over its history of years. This has happened due to many things but one of them  something fascinating called erosion. Erosion is when land or surface is worn away due to many natural elements. Natural elements  as in water, air, chemicals and ice. These many different elements come on some sort of land and  when it comes on that surface  and shapes it,by maybe breaking parts away or shortening it making that surface more thin and narrow. Of course because of this erosion and how long are land has lived that is why there are all those land  marks. Some times the our earth changes its shape  due to many different natural disasters. For example earth quakes and tsunamis can really affect how land looks. An earth quake can make a big crack or make a piece of land fall. A tsunami can break land apart or drift land away. Same as all kind of disasters like sink holes or hurricanes and floods, avalanches Etc. Not only that shapes the solid  and liquid surfaces of the earth. Another three things do it like weathering. Weathering is when rocks and minerals break down due to long exposure to the atmosphere. Weathering is caused by water, ice, acids, salt and plants and animals. Moving on from that climate is the other cause of our lands and surfaces moving and changing. Climate changes the surfaces by creating glaciers that can cut peaks of mountains.

Tia The Scientist

Hi,my name is Tia Fikry and I love science. I love science because I enjoy exploring our world.  I usually love to study animals and all about them. It is seriously amazing to study these creatures and how they live.  Things that help me in science are my eagerness to explore, collaboration, curiosity and observing skills.  One of my favorite things about science are experiments.  Experiments really help me because it gives me a visual explanation of the research. I would love to learn more about the human body and how it works and start of earth.  And also mysteries of science are what I am on the edge of the seat for. Also I enjoy working with others. On the  whole science to me is like a long hard work movie of the world. I just love to learn more about where I am and who I am.
